A diabetic woman becoming pregnant can face a number of problems during her pregnancy. The complications can either be maternal complications or fetal complications.
Maternal complications:
*Recurrent abortions can occur in women with uncontrolled diabetes.
*Infections are more common especially urinary tract infection.
*Increased incidence of pre-eclampsia or pregnancy induced hypertension.
*Increased incidence of polyhydroamnios; which is a condition associated with excessive amount of amniotic fluid.
*Maternal distress can occur because of polyhydroamnios or because of the big size of the baby.
*Labor might be prolonged and difficult because of big size of the baby.
*Infection and hemorrhage more common after delivery.
Fetal complications:
*Big baby: babies born to diabetic mothers are usually huge in size.
*Congenital malformations: various congenital malformations have been seen in babies born to diabetic mothers. Some of the common ones are-
Involving the Central nervous system: neural tube defects, microcephaly, anencephaly.
Cardio vascular system: cardiomegaly, atrial and ventricular septal defects.
Gastro intestinal tract: duodenal atresia
Renal system: renal agenesis.
*Unexplained fetal death can occur.
*After birth, baby can suffer from jaundice and respiratory distress.
To avoid these complications, pregnant diabetic women must consult their doctors regularly. Sugar monitoring is extremely important throughout the course of pregnancy.

hey..first of all there nothing to be scared of…
diabetes can present in many ways… excessive thirst, exessive hunger, excessive urination are all its symptoms.. wounds that do not heal easily can also be due to diabetes..tiredness is another..bascially the symptoms also vary with the type of diabetes one is suffering from. My advice will be that you must visit a doctor.. there is nothing to be scared about.. you must get your doubts cleared… so visit a doc n get ur sugar levels done..its a simple test…atleast u’ll get rid of this fear… abt the palm pain..it cud be due to various reasons..its very difficult to tell form here..
Good luck!

Thank you doc….
I dont have excesive thirst or hunger but sometimes cant control urination….. I mean I do take beer on a regular basis and uncontrolled urination is probably the effect of beer. But i get tired easily. Again I am a very lazy guy…. hence I get tired easily I guess.
I was waiting for ur reply and checking this web page on a daily basis. This site is urs, but I think u dont give so much importance to this site. If u consider my suggestion, this is a beautiful site and very informative. U can do a bit of promotion for this. i am sure ppl like me wud be benefited from this.
I liked ur article on smoking & all…. I do smoke and trying to quit but not being able to do it completely. But yes…. improvement is there. I have minimized that. Thanks again and if u can give me a little information abt positive effect of minimizing smoking…. it wud be helpful.
Finally, I think u r a good doctor and a nice human being. Keep up the good work doc.

abt the smoking part..well i guess u have already read that article on smoking… the ill effects of smoking are way too many… i know how people get addicted to it…but is it really worth it? i mean think about it…! i guess if u have to choose b/w smoking n ur life..u would definitely choose ur life..isnt it? we all want to live n fulfil our dreams… smoking for a long period of time can lead to serious side effects… its better to quit now than regret later..
trust me..it will do wonders for u!
