Thyroid disorders are common, affecting some 5% of the population. It commonly affects females. One can either have the excess of thyroid hormones in their body, known as ‘Thyrotoxicosis’ or the deficiency of it which is known as ‘Hypothyroidism’. The thyroid hormones T4 and T3 are very important for various body functions. They play a very important role in body metabolism.

A patient having thyroid disorder can present in several ways. One can also be asymptomatic or have non-specific complaints like weight gain and tiredness. It is important that you know these symptoms so that you can consult your doctor immediately.

Thyrotoxicosis is a state when one has excess of thyroid hormones in their body. Such patients often complain of weight loss in spite of normal or increased appetite. They complain of fatigue and are usually intolerant to heat. They’ll usually tell that they just can’t walk in the sun. Gastrointestinal upset is also common. They’ll usually have diarrhea and few elderly patients might also have anorexia. Patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis will have shortness of breath on exertion, and can also have palpitations. One of the most common symptoms that such patients come up with is that they feel irritable, restless. They often complain of anxiety and emotional liability. Increased sweating and itching are the common skin problems with these patients. Females can have irregular menstrual cycles and can even become infertile. Spontaneous abortions can also occur in those who are pregnant.

On the other hand, Hypothyroidism is a condition when the levels of thyroid hormones are below the normal levels. Such patients usually require thyroid supplementation from outside, throughout their life. These patients usually come with the complaint of sudden weight gain without any apparent reason. They are usually intolerant to cold. They often feel tired and exhausted. In contrast to thyrotoxicosis, these patients have constipation. They also complain of pains and aches in various body parts, muscle stiffness and depression. Some might also have hearing loss. Classically, hypothyroid patients have dry skin and dry hair. They also have loss of hair especially of outer brow. Females can have problems with the menstrual cycles. They often have heavy bleeding. It can also lead to infertility in few.
